About this Blog

I am an MSc Animation & Visualisation student at DJCAD in Dundee, Scotland. "Once Bitten" is the working title for my personal project and final outcome short film. The characters in my film will be 2D, animated digitally, but the environments they inhabit will be filmed in live action.

"Once Bitten" is a story about a woman who meets a wolf cub alone in the forest, the mood is light and playful and about the pair of new friends escaping their normal lives. However the mood darkens when the cub accidentally falls into a human trap and his mother catches up with him and his new companion.

Rough Storyboard (1st draft)

I done drew this not really knowing what characters would look like yet- but anyway it's easily editable , i'll make an animatic out of this soon with sounds and things...

Character Design D:

Here's me trying out lots of different styles and ways of drawing my hero… i should probably give her a name or this is going to get awkward very quickly.

suckerpunch/asterix & obelix: vikings (Abba) crossover thing
pencil and ink
different shapes and sizes of adolescent girls
 concept- marker, biro, pencil, watercolour
lots of little russian girls ^_^ watercolour, biro
contrasting styles and colour- watercolour, biro, pencil
I like the little line pattern  i drew straight on top of colour in the middle drawing- and the texture on the fur boots.

wee sketches- some coloured (pro markers)

Character Research

I sketched and thought about some memorable characters to help me create my protagonist.

I also created a mood board specifically for thinking about how my female lead will look.

 Babydoll- Suckerpunch

Protagonist/Hero/Anima
Selfless, Independent, Pure, Courageous.

Bad-ass fighter
Supernaturally powerful (anime/fantasy style) appears small, sweet and weak.
Buffy Summers- Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Protagonist/Hero/Anima
2 sided: very average, relatable, pretty teenage girl vs secret identity: vampire slayer, ruthless killer of beasts, protector of human kind, she represents the good vs. evil.

supernaturally powerful
Her appearance is deceptive
Her gifts make her isolated.
quick witted, innocent.

 Chell- Portal

Protagonist i.e. the player.
Average human with extraordinary guts, she's fearless and never gives up.

Not physically powerful
Mysterious- the strong silent type
tackles her warped destiny head on

Mindy/Hit Girl- Kick Ass

Hero/Mentor
2 sided: sweet harmless little girl vs secret identity: killing machine.
Represents good vs. evil

Naturally powerful (comic book style though)
manipulative,
quick witted,
filthy mouth,
emotionally motivated,
fearless,
protective

I think Hit Girl is closest to what i'd like to base my female lead on.

Mooood Boooard

Have a gander to see lots of things that inspired me for this project, and how i would like my film to look and feel maybe…

Here We Go Again

Hello, and welcome to my new project blog!

I'm back at Duncan of Jordanstone to be a resident animator  after graduating from the course in 2013, and i have an idea for a film i'd like to make ^_^ I'll be posting all updates here, so follow the blog if you'd like to keep an eye on me!

Basically i had this idea for a long time to make a short animated film based around the story of Anastasia the lost Princess, i wanted to make it in 2D and have lots of lovely pattern through it in the style of a russian story book. I was inspired by Secret of the Kells by Cartoon saloon, it had lots of pattern in the style of the illustrations in the Book of the Kells.

Anyway, this idea got put to one side when i made a sketch in preparation for halloween- trying to think of a costume for myself.

This cute little badass has dominated my work ever since. I decided to keep the cool russian-pattern-style for the film though, but completely change the story.

The Synopsis:
A young girl with extraordinary, secret, slaying powers protects her village from the threat of  an evil monster living in the forest.

Yes, it's a bit "Little Red Riding Hood". Yes, it's a bit "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". I could go on… I'm very inspired by powerful little women.

Stay tuned...
