About this Blog

I am an MSc Animation & Visualisation student at DJCAD in Dundee, Scotland. "Once Bitten" is the working title for my personal project and final outcome short film. The characters in my film will be 2D, animated digitally, but the environments they inhabit will be filmed in live action.

"Once Bitten" is a story about a woman who meets a wolf cub alone in the forest, the mood is light and playful and about the pair of new friends escaping their normal lives. However the mood darkens when the cub accidentally falls into a human trap and his mother catches up with him and his new companion.

Change of Direction

After making the animatic i had lots of thinks and discussions about what was wrong with it and what exactly the back story was in my head that i was failing to get across fully.

*So i've written a short piece intended as a sort of trailer or pre-qual*. The only problem with it being that it would act very much like the short at the beginning of "Brave" before the titles- except mine's would not involve my main character- Anna, as she hasn't been born yet- this is sad because the idea of HER got me started on this whole endeavour.

I know all it is is a bunch of boring writing but i really like the dramatic, quick set up of this sequence of events, it hints towards the very beginning of the story of Anna. It's a bit much to post here so hopefully i'll get a story board version of it done soon. In the mean time, here is an abridged explanation of the new story- which is very different from my original animatic.

In short my backstory for Anna's story was this:

*Anna's father was a wood cutter, he saved his wife and Anna from a wolf in the forest near the village once a long time ago. He became a hero for slaying the beast, and earned himself the new responsibility of protecting the village from the wolf pack's annual revenge attacks.*

Every year around harvest time a wolf would attempt to take a human from the village. But every year, Peter, Anna's father would kill the wolf, he had quite a talent for it.

The story i wanted to show was this:

Anna is born into a village that lives in giddy fear; they know that the wolves in the forest have a vendetta against them but they have faith in her father and love and cherish her and her mother, Rachel. One year, when Anna is around 10, Peter comes home gravely injured, and with no wolf head. He dies, and the village mourns him, they are no longer safe.

Next year, a wolf takes a child from the village. The villagers turn on Rachel and Anna. They think the only way to stop more people being killed is to sacrifice them as the family of the man who killed the first of the wolves.

When the next harvest moon rises they lead the woman and the girl to the forest in a ritual procession.

Then a chase would ensue and Anna and Rachel would be trapped and close to being mauled by a huge, battle scarred, grotesque wolf. Anna would reveal unprecedented bravery and strength for her years, protecting her mother. The wolf is the grown cub from the trailer before the titles, seeking revenge for the death of his mother. He remembers that Rachel set him free from the snare and is touched by how fiercely Anna protects her, as he fiercely wished he could run to his mother's side all those years ago. He leaves them alive, the idea is that peace is restored after the encounter.

Hopefully that makes more sense and is a bit cooler than my original animatic! There's more blood, more wolf, more danger, more motive... i'm open to suggestions on any changes or tweaks though ^_^.

Incidentally, this song inspired me to go for a shorter and more dramatic trailer-type project, just because it is the perfect length and pace for a trailer, If this project happened, i'd love to commission an original score based on this.

Peace
